Waiting, waiting, waiting...

I think this is a first for me: I’m waiting for two results at the same time now.

TMA4 was submitted yesterday for DD101, and the final assignment for D171 was submitted two weeks ago today. The one for D171 is especially hard to wait for, because it’s the final one for the course and there’s a chance I could get a distinction (need an 83% or better). The trouble with that course is, the tutor groups are generally 3 times as big as with DD101, so each tutor has a lot of essays to get through. I think my last one took four weeks…I hope it’s not that long this time!

As for DD101…What am I going to get this time? 50? 90? Who knows. I guess it depends what gets drawn out of the hat.

DD101: TMA 4 Done...

Due to the misery that this course has become, thanks largely to the awful tutor/student relationship I find myself a part of, I’ve decided to put 90% less time and effort into the assignments. Up until this point, I’ve completed all the work as advised in the learning companions, going through a chapter a week, taking notes, doing the online activities when I’m told to do so, and so on.

All that effort got me scores I didn’t deserve and no willingness to help in any way when I asked politely – in fact, what I got was massive disrespect. This being a pass or fail course, and it having no impact on the final degree I’ll one day earn, I’ve decided my time and effort is much better spent on the other areas of my life.

So this time I did in 2 days what the learning companion said should take 4 weeks. No note-taking, didn’t read chapter 9, didn’t make an essay plan. Just read the chapters/listened to the audios in a couple of hours yesterday, and wrote the assignment in one 3 hour sitting tonight (I think I’ll submit it tomorrow because I don’t fancy negotiating the new submission system at 2 in the morning…Just in case).

For my previous assignment I spent the whole month on the thing and received the lowest mark I’ve ever got in my entire school/uni/night school/distance learning/OU history, so let’s see what a half-assed attempt gets me!

In the end, this one came in at 1,600 words, and for something done so fast it’s not bad. Let’s see how it gets scored.

D171: Final TMA Done...

Just finished the final TMA for D171 (although the OU site has been down for a while, so I can’t submit it yet – deadline is noon tomorrow).

It actually turned out to be pretty tough, mainly because there was so much material to include in the essay and so little room as far as word count. Part 1 of the assignment asked for a discussion on counselling, its history, its development, and the skills a good counsellor should possess. All that in 1,000 words. Not easy. I’ve spent the past 90 minutes getting it down from 1,500 words to 1,050 words.

Part 2 was the final 500 words, and asked for some self analysis regarding the basic counselling skills and competencies: where I am already strong, and where I am currently weak in the areas that would matter if I pursued counselling as a career.

I’m very happy with my answers in both parts, and considering I have a tutor in this course who marks fairly and assists me when I ask a question, I predict a good mark, possibly in the 90s (but 83 or above will do for the 85 course average and a pass with distinction).

DD101: Marks Back For TMA03...

69% and useless comments. Nothing more to say. Bring on the end of this course.

Officially Withdrawn From Child Development (ED209...

I’m really disappointed to be writing this update…But I’ve officially withdrawn from the Child Development (ED209) course. A health problem I thought I was past has returned, and with a business to run and another 60 point course on the go, I didn’t think it was sensible to take it on. I guess I was lucky to figure that out now, before the course had begun.

I heard back from the Open University a few minutes ago. Since the course hasn’t started I can have a full refund (Thank God!) and I don’t even have to return the course materials (wasn’t expecting that). I can keep them to use when I eventually take ED209, unless they get updated and then they’ll send a fresh batch.

I’d had a look at the materials over the past week or so, and I was really looking forward to this course. Oh well…I’ll get to it next year I guess.
